Kevin Williams, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, and collaborators at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Seoul National University identified a group of brain cells that may play an important role in how GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, reduce appetite and promote weight loss. Their research points to neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus as a significant target of these medications, helping researchers better understand how weight-loss drugs influence the brain’s regulation of hunger and food intake.
The findings could ultimately help researchers improve the effectiveness of GLP-1-based therapies and explore their potential for treating obesity and other metabolic diseases. Dr. Williams’ research focuses on how neural circuits in the hypothalamus regulate metabolism, body weight, food intake, and glucose balance.
