Undergraduate researchers participating in UT Southwestern’s Amgen Scholars Program gained firsthand experience in biomedical research through work in the laboratory of Jeffrey Zigman, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. The nationally competitive summer program places students in research laboratories where they work closely with faculty mentors while exploring careers in science and medicine.
Among the participants was Lydia Meressi, a Penn State undergraduate who joined Dr. Zigman’s lab to conduct research and learn how scientific discoveries move from the laboratory toward a better understanding of human health and disease. The experience provided direct exposure to experimental design, data analysis, and the collaborative nature of academic research.
The Amgen Scholars Program is designed to help undergraduate students evaluate future paths in biomedical science, medicine, and graduate education. By working alongside established investigators and research teams, students gain practical experience that can help shape future training and career decisions while contributing to ongoing scientific inquiry.
